The Salamander's Tale
a story about Bioliving for “Riding the Heatwave” – a bike trip from Portugal to the Netherlands.
I left Coimbra, moved by the wind through this eucalyptic landscape, motivated by the idea of meeting a group of protectors who safeguard something very valuable in their territory around Albergaria-a-Velha.
BioLiving is an association created in 2016 that dedicates its time to promoting sustainability and bridging the gap between natural heritage and local communities, raising awareness about the protection and interaction with these natural values, and providing environmental educational opportunities. Each initiative is always based on four fundamental pillars: nature conservation, environmental education and training, monitoring and scientific consulting, and social inclusion and action. It is driven by these values that we get to work.
“This was one of the areas affected by last year’s fire”, says Daniela Salazar, a biologist at BioLiving, as we walk with hoes and shears in hand through a eucalyptus cemetery.
Passing by these trees, which are now nothing more than burnt matchsticks, volunteers are already rolling up their sleeves, absorbed in their work. While being surrounded by this grey tone can be disheartening, the dedication and joy of these people prove otherwise.
This duality takes me back to my college days when, on a field trip, Colonel Rosa Pinto, who became a botanist out of passion, explained to us that there are plant species that need fire to help awaken their seeds for germination and development. Perhaps the same process is happening here with each of these people, within whom, either through education or curiosity, a certain environmental concern and solidarity has germinated. And this manifests in various ways.
Here and now, some are tending to the soil by removing invasive species and restoring an old ravine, others are identifying species, and some are creatively testing new techniques for monitoring reptile and amphibian species. In this small quadrant of territory, there is a certain motto that passes through every generation that gets their hands dirty here: nature is for and belongs to everyone.
Amidst the blackened eucalyptus forest, a small native forest survives. It is called the Micro-reserve of Fonte do Cabreiro and has been managed by the Association since 2016. Daniela tells me that in 2022, the fire that broke out in the region was halted by this green patch, as the native grove slowed the flames, prevented their spread to urban areas, and served as a shield for the rich biodiversity within it, especially protecting one of the most valuable natural treasures of our peninsula, the Gold-striped salamander.
The humidity in the air welcomes the arrival of the night; the noise of the light gives way to the sound of water traveling downstream. Hoes and scissors are replaced by lanterns, and like those on an expedition in the Amazon, we venture along the trails of the micro-reserve.
“This is the type of habitat that the gold-striped salamander likes,” says Daniel Santos, aa BioLiving biologist, as he explains that this species, endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, usually inhabits agricultural fields, meadows, and mountainous areas shaped by oxygenated streams and marginal vegetation, between central and northern Portugal, where the climate is more temperate and the humidity high.
The restoration of these micro-reserves with high ecological value is due to the Lusitanica project, created in 2016 and coordinated by BioLiving. Identifying the presence of this species, as well as others like the Iberian emerald lizard (Lacerta schreiberi) and the Stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), sparked an interest in nature conservation and the integrated and sustainable valorization of the territory in this region.
The canopies of chestnut and oak trees cover the starry sky, bringing a certain mystique to the forest. The construction of a network of trails aids in navigation, and the team disperses along them.
After a few minutes, someone says from afar: “There’s a baby gold-striped salamander here!”. With all the care and precision, already knowing this amphibian’s tricks by instinct, Daniel places it in a tube to examine it, and I take the opportunity to record my first contact with such a species. I was already happy and ready to end the day when another team member announced the sighting of two adult salamanders in a puddle.
As the team showed me the most striking characteristics of this species – its enormous tail and its two golden stripes – the same feeling of watching nature documentaries and the reason I became a biologist grew within me.
The salamanders are placed back in the puddle, and as their golden figures slowly disappear into the murky water, I wonder if this species might be the Lusitanian El Dorado.
